On the way to the biggest larch trees in Europe-43951

Balavaux is a wooded alpine meadow situated in the commune of Isérables. It contains over 250 trees aged from 300 to 1,000 years old. Some of them are classified amongst the biggest larches in Europe. One of them, with a circumference of 14.6 metres, even holds the first place ! A footbridge allows one to walk around it. It also plays a protective role.

The telecabine of Tracouet is open until 18 October 2020.  From there, hikers can reach Balavaux on foot in about 30 minutes. They then have the possibility either to go back up as far as Tracouet, or to continue their walk along the bisse de Saxon before rejoining Nendaz. (see itinerary)

From 19 October to 1 November 2020 at 10:30 am, a shuttle bus leaving Nendaz Tourisme takes walkers to Balavaux. The return is made on foot along the bisse de Saxon (see itinerary).

Registration obligatory at Nendaz Tourisme on 027 289 55 89 or at up to 5 pm the previous day (Sunday 1pm). Price: 10 francs per adult, 7 francs per child, 5 francs per dog.

Guided walk

A guided walk (only in French) is offered on 22 and 29 October 2020 on the theme of "the long life of the biggest larches in Europe". Participants have a rendezvous at 2 pm at Nendaz Tourisme and then are driven to Balavaux by bus. From 2:30 to 5 pm, a mountain leader guides them across this wooded alpine meadow (easy walk). Why do larch trees feel so at home at Balavaux ? Why do they become so large ? What dangers threaten them ? Learn a lot about these multi-centennials ! Registration until Tuesday 5pm. Price : CHF 25 adult / CHF 15 child. More info here
