The Larch trees of Balavaux

Excursions & guided tours

Europe's largest Larch trees reveal the secret of their long life-span.

Event has ended

Balavaux, located in the region of Isérables, is a wooded pasture which is home to around a hundred cows every summer. This mountain pasture is also home to about 250 Larches, some of which have reached the venerable age of 1000 years. These multi-century-old trees radiate strength and serenity. Among them is even the most imposing one in Europe, nicknamed "the King of Balavaux", which has a circumference of 11.8 m.

A guided walk is offered in autumn on the theme "The long life of Europe's largest Larch trees".

The participants meet at Tracouet (at the top of the gondola). A middle-mountain guide leads you across this pasture.

Why do larch trees feel so at home in Balavaux ? Why do they grow so big ? What dangers threaten them ? Learn more about these multi-centenarians while admiring their flamboyant autumn colours here! Between late October and early November, the autumn light creates an explosion of contrasts between the yellow-orange of the trees and the first snows on the surrounding summits.
